# AI auto-tagging

> Let Stashr tag every new save automatically, based on both the post text and its images.

With auto-tagging on, every new save gets descriptive tags automatically, based on both the post text and its images. Stashr also reads what is inside each image behind the scenes (image recognition), which is what lets you [search](/docs/search) your images by their content, not just by the post's text or tags.

<Callout type="info">
AI auto-tagging is a Pro feature. It is also fully available during the free trial.
</Callout>

## Turning it on

Open **Settings > Tags & Organisation > AI Auto-tagging** and flip the **Enable auto-tagging** switch. It is also offered during onboarding.

## Steering the AI

In the same settings section there is a free-text **Tagging instructions** box. Use it to steer the AI toward preferred topics, a tag style, or a language. Press **Save prompt** after editing.

The AI reuses your existing tags where they fit instead of inventing near-duplicates, and the [Clean up tags](/docs/tags) tool catches any drift.

## Timing

Tagging is asynchronous and batched. Tags usually appear within minutes, but occasionally it can take up to a day.

On a card you will see the stages in order:

| Stage | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| **Capturing…** | The full content is still arriving. |
| **Tagging…** | AI is running (shown with a small pulse). |
| Tags appear | Tagging is done. |

## What the AI sees

Only still images are read by image recognition. For videos, the poster image is what the AI sees.

## Trial allowance

Trial accounts have an AI tagging allowance: a capped number of auto-tagged bookmarks, shown as a meter in **Settings > Billing** and on the trial card in the sidebar. Paid Pro has no such meter.

## Turning it off

You can turn auto-tagging off anytime. Existing tags stay.
