# Saving from GitHub

> Star a repository on GitHub and Stashr mirrors it into your library, with its description, README excerpt, and topics.

Stashr watches GitHub's own **Star** button. Star a repository and it lands in your Stashr library. Stars are the only GitHub action captured; issues, pull requests, and gists are not.

## Starring a repo

1. **Open any repository**

   Go to the repo page on github.com.

2. **Click Star**

   Click **Star** in the repo header. Stashr mirrors the action for you.

3. **Look for the confirmation**

   A small "Stashed" tooltip appears near the button. If the capture failed, it says "Failed" in red; the repo is still starred on GitHub either way.

4. **Find it in your library**

   The repo appears in [your bookmarks](https://stashr.me/bookmarks). If AI tagging is on, tags follow shortly after.


Unstarring on GitHub removes the repo from Stashr too. The tooltip shows "Unstashed" to confirm.

## What gets captured

- **Name, owner, and description**, plus the link back to the repo.
- **README excerpt**: the opening of the README as plain text, so search and AI tagging know what the project does.
- **Topics, primary language, license**, and whether the repo is a fork or archived.
- **Star count** at the time you saved it.
- **Cover image**: the repo's social preview, or the owner's avatar for private repos.

> **Note: Private repos**
>
> Stashr reads GitHub through your own logged-in session, so private repos you can see are captured too. It never calls the GitHub API and never asks for a token.


## Importing your GitHub stars

Press **Import** on the GitHub row in the extension popup. Stashr pages through your Stars list using your GitHub session, private repos included, and enriches each one from its repo page. No tab opens and nothing scrolls. You must be logged in to GitHub.

> **Tip: Order of import**
>
> GitHub does not expose when you starred each repo, so imported stars keep GitHub's "recently starred" order rather than an exact timestamp.
