How comment-context capture works, what it can and can't handle, and where the output is most useful.
Context is the parent chain of comments above the one you linked: the target comment plus its ancestors back to the post, capped at 10 levels by Reddit's API. It matters because Reddit threads are deeply nested and a single reply rarely reads on its own. Preserving the chain keeps the conversation intact for citations, research notes, and anything you're saving to Notion or Obsidian months down the line.
If a parent comment was deleted or removed by mods, Reddit still returns the entry with a [deleted] or [removed] body. The tool shows a [deleted] placeholder so the chain stays visible and the indentation makes sense, rather than collapsing the gap and confusing the reader.
It uses Reddit's public .json endpoint, the same one you can hit by appending .json to any comment permalink in the browser. No Reddit API key, no OAuth, no login. Your browser hits a thin Stashr endpoint that forwards the request to Reddit (the browser can't call Reddit directly because of CORS) and returns the response unchanged.
Private, quarantined, or banned subreddits return 403 from the .json endpoint, and the tool surfaces that as a friendly error instead of pretending to succeed. There's no way around this without an authenticated Reddit API client, which is out of scope for a public tool.
No. Sibling replies (other comments at the same level as your target) are intentionally excluded. The tool focuses on the direct parent chain above the comment so the conversation reads top-to-bottom without distraction. If you want the broader thread, the 'View on Reddit' links open the original page where every reply is visible.
The Reddit post to Markdown tool starts from a post URL and renders the post body plus the top 5 comments. This tool starts from a single comment permalink and renders the parent chain leading to that comment, target highlighted. Use the post tool for citing a thread overview, and this tool for citing a specific reply in context.
Reddit caps the visible parent chain at roughly 10 levels in its API response. If your comment sits deeper than that, the tool will show the deepest 10 ancestors it can resolve. That's a Reddit-side limit, not a Stashr one. For the absolute root post, the header card at the top always points at the original submission regardless of chain depth.
