Where are my Hacker News favorites?

Go to news.ycombinator.com/favorites?id= followed by your username, or click your username at the top of Hacker News and open your favorites from your profile. Stories and comments are listed separately, newest favorite first.

Are Hacker News favorites public?

Yes. Anyone who knows your username can open your favorites list. Upvotes are the private list. Stashr only imports the favorites of the account you are logged in with.

Can I search my Hacker News favorites?

Not on Hacker News itself. The site search covers all of HN, not your favorites. Stashr makes every favorite searchable by meaning, comments included.

How do I export my Hacker News favorites?

Hacker News has no export for favorites and the official API does not expose them. Stashr's one-time import walks your favorite stories and comments and keeps a searchable copy of each.

Built-in feature

Stashr vs Hacker News favorites

Hacker News keeps your favorites as one long public list, 30 at a time, with no way to search, tag, or export them. Stashr keeps a searchable copy of every story and comment you favorite, right alongside your saves from X, Reddit, Instagram, TikTok, GitHub, and LinkedIn.

What Hacker News favorites can't do, and how Stashr fixes it

Your favorites are one list per type, stories in one and comments in another, 30 at a time behind a More link. After a few hundred, finding one means paging back until you spot it.
Stashr puts every favorite in one library you can filter, sort, and browse however you like.
There is no search inside your favorites. HN search covers the whole site, not the things you chose to keep.
Stashr finds a favorite by meaning, in plain English, across everything you have saved.
A favorite is only a pointer. If the author deletes a comment you favorited, its text is gone from Hacker News.
Stashr keeps its own copy of the story details and the full comment text from the moment you save it.
There is no export, and the official Hacker News API does not include favorites at all.
Stashr imports your existing favorites and keeps them readable, searchable, and exportable.

Common questions

The verdict

If you favorite a handful of stories as a short reading list, Hacker News's own favorites are fine and cost nothing. Once your favorites become the place you keep the best threads and comments you have read, the gaps show: there is no search, no way to organize, no export, and a deleted comment takes its text with it. Stashr keeps a searchable copy of every story and comment you favorite and pulls your GitHub stars and your X, Reddit, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn saves into the same library. If you want to find that comment again next year, Stashr is the better home for it.
