Stashr now saves your Hacker News favorites
Hacker News support is live in Stashr. Import your favorite stories and comments, capture new favorites as you click, and search them in plain English.

Hacker News favorites are where the best comment you read all year goes to be forgotten. There's no search, stories and comments sit in two separate lists, and if the author deletes a comment, its text is gone. Starting today, Stashr can keep a copy of what you favorite.
What's new
Hacker News joins X, Reddit, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, GitHub, and LinkedIn as a platform the Stashr extension captures from. There are two parts, and they work together:
- Import your favorites. From the extension popup or your Connections page, Stashr pages through your favorite stories, then your favorite comments, and copies them into your library. Run it again any time and it only adds what's new.
- Capture new favorites. Once you're set up, clicking favorite on a story or a comment in a desktop browser is captured on the spot, with a small "Stashed" tooltip on the link. Clicking un-favorite removes it from your library too.
From there, your favorites get the same plain-English search as everything else in Stashr, plus AI tags on Pro and during the trial. Search "that comment about postgres vacuum tuning" and it finds the comment, even if you can't remember the thread.
What Stashr keeps from each favorite
| What you favorited | What Stashr keeps |
|---|---|
| Link stories | Title, link, site, author, and the points and comment count at the time you saved it |
| Ask HN and Show HN posts | All of the above, plus the post's text |
| Comments | Full text with links and code blocks, author, and the story it was posted on |
What it doesn't copy
Stashr keeps a story's link, not the article behind it, and it doesn't save the discussion thread under a story. To keep an article itself, save the web page with a right-click. Upvotes aren't captured, only favorites. A comment already deleted when you import is skipped. Hacker News also doesn't show when you favorited something, so imported favorites keep your list's order rather than an exact date.
How to connect Hacker News
Hacker News is off until you allow it. Stashr only asks for access to news.ycombinator.com when you choose to connect it, and if you decline, nothing else changes.
- Install the extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Firefox, and sign in at stashr.me. The install docs walk through it.
- Log in to Hacker News in that same browser. Stashr only imports the account you're logged in with.
- Turn on Hacker News once. Click Turn on next to Hacker News in the extension popup or on your Connections page. A Stashr tab opens: click Allow access, then Allow when your browser asks. Your browser words this as "read and change" your data on the site. Stashr only reads those pages.
- Let the import run. No tab opens and nothing scrolls. It reads one page of 30 favorites every few seconds to stay polite to Hacker News, so a thousand favorites take a few minutes.
- Keep favoriting the way you already do. New favorites are captured as you click.

Common questions
Does Stashr need my Hacker News password?
No. The extension reads Hacker News through your logged-in browser session. Stashr never sees or stores your Hacker News password.
Are my favorites private in Stashr?
Yes. Your Stashr library is private to you, even though your favorites list on Hacker News is public to anyone who knows your username.
Can I import someone else's favorites?
No. Favorites are public on Hacker News, but Stashr only imports the account you're logged in with.
Can I turn Hacker News capture off?
Yes. The Hacker News card on your Connections page has a capture toggle, and the same switch lives in the extension's options. Turning it off stops new captures and imports without touching what's already in your library.
