Saving from Hacker News

Favorite a story or a comment on Hacker News and Stashr mirrors it into your library, with the title, link, and full comment text.

Stashr watches Hacker News's own favorite link. Favorite a story or a comment and it lands in your Stashr library. Favorites are the only Hacker News action captured; upvotes are not.

Turning on Hacker News

Hacker News is off until you allow it, so adding it never interrupts the rest of the extension.

  1. Click Turn on

In the extension popup, click Turn on next to Hacker News. You can also press Turn on on the Hacker News card on the Connections page.

  2. Allow access

A Stashr tab opens. Click Allow access, then Allow in Chrome's prompt. Chrome words it as "read and change your data on news.ycombinator.com"; Stashr only reads those pages.

  3. Your favorites come in

Stashr starts importing your existing favorites, and from then on captures every new one.

If you decline, nothing else changes, and Hacker News stays off until you click Turn on again.

Favoriting a story

  1. Open the story's page

Click the story's comments link (or its timestamp, like "3 hours ago") to open it on its own page.

  2. Click favorite

Click favorite in the line under the title. Stashr mirrors the action for you.

  3. Find it in your library

The story appears in your bookmarks. If AI tagging is on, tags follow shortly after.

Favoriting a comment

  1. Open the comment on its own page

Click the comment's timestamp, next to the author's name.

  2. Click favorite

Click favorite in the comment's header, after parent and context.

A quick confirmation

A small "Stashed" tooltip appears on the favorite link as you click, like on other platforms. Hacker News loads the next page right away, so it only shows for a moment. Stashr records the save in that split second and never slows the page down.

Clicking un-favorite, on the item's page or on your favorites list, removes it from Stashr too.

What gets captured

  • Stories: the title, the link and the site it points to, who posted it and when, and its points and comment count at the time you saved it.
  • Ask HN and Show HN posts: their text, so the question or launch post is searchable, not just its title.
  • Comments: the full comment text, including links and code blocks, who wrote it and when, and the story it was posted on.

Stashr keeps the story's link, not a copy of the article it points to. To keep the article itself, open it and right-click → Save page to Stashr. Stashr does not save the discussion thread under a story.

Importing your Hacker News favorites

Press Import on the Hacker News row in the extension popup (or Turn on, the first time). Stashr pages through your favorite stories, then your favorite comments, using your Hacker News session. No tab opens and nothing scrolls. You must be logged in to Hacker News in the same browser.

Stashr only imports the favorites of the account you are logged in with. Favorites are public on Hacker News, but Stashr never imports anyone else's.

Pace and order

The import reads one page of 30 favorites every few seconds to stay polite to Hacker News, so a thousand favorites take a few minutes. If Hacker News asks it to slow down, it waits and carries on by itself. Hacker News does not show when you favorited each item, so imported favorites keep your favorites list's order rather than an exact timestamp.
